Tee Up at These 9 Golf Courses Around Cincinnati

Golf Courses - Cincinnati, OH - Cutler Real Estate

If ever there was a summer when we could all use a day on the golf course, it's this one. In the midst of a year that will long be remembered for face masks and Zoom meetings, a breath of fresh air in the great outdoors feels more precious than ever.

Did we mention that August is National Golf Month? When you get down to it, there may be no better game than golf for the times we're living through. You're outside, you can easily maintain social distancing, and you get to release some tension by hitting a ball really, really hard. We recommend doing just that at these Cincinnati area golf courses.

Woodland Golf Course

5820 Muddy Creek Rd, Cincinnati, OH 45233

Woodland Golf Course is one of Cincinnati's true hidden gems. The 9-hole executive golf course at Woodland makes it a favorite of families, newcomers to the game, and anyone with an hour or two to kill before they have to head back to the office. It's fun, family-friendly, and affordable. Plus, if you're looking to try something new and exciting, Woodland is also home to an 18-hole footgolf course (think of it as a combination of golf and soccer) that has a reputation as one of the best in the Midwest.

Blue Ash Golf Course

Public golf courses sometimes get a bad rap for being unkempt and poorly maintained. But Blue Ash Golf Course, often cited as one of Cincinnati's finest public courses, makes a strong argument to the contrary. With a reputation for being professionally and regularly maintained, Blue Ash Golf Course offers a fun and relaxing course that can challenge golfers of all skill levels. Golf Digest ranked Blue Ash Golf Course among the 75 best municipal golf courses in America. There are also terrific views to be had from just about any hole on this 18-hole, par-72 course.

California Golf Course

5924 Kellogg Ave., Cincinnati, OH 45228

Another of the top public courses in the city, California Golf Course lies on the east side of Cincinnati, on sloping terrain that overlooks the broad expanse of the Ohio River. You'd be hard-pressed to find a city-owned course with a better view. It's a fun 18-hole course, with tree-lined fairways and challenging greens. California Golf Course is also one of Cincinnati's longest municipal golf courses, with 6,227 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 70.

Hickory Woods Golf Course

Nestled in the community of Loveland, Ohio—about 15 miles northeast of the Cincinnati city limits—Hickory Woods Golf Course is a spot that keeps golfers coming back time and time again. That's partly thanks to the picturesque scenery at Hickory Woods, but also because of its notoriously challenging greens, especially in the back nine. The course makes for a great weekend getaway, equally welcoming to rookies and seasoned golf veterans, and can test just about anyone's skill.

Devou Park Golf Course

1201 Park Dr., Covington, KY 41011

A post shared by DevouPark (@devoupark) on

Devou Park Golf Course lies just over the Ohio line in Covington, Kentucky. One of its most striking features is its scenic hilltop location, which offers a spectacular view of the Cincinnati skyline. It's also a favorite haunt for local bird watchers, nestled among the rolling hills of Devou Park and right under a major flyway, and is a certified Cooperative Sanctuary by Audubon International. The staff is friendly and experienced, and the 18-hole course feels secluded and peaceful, despite being convenient to both cities.

Aston Oaks Golf Club

A post shared by Keegan Haag (@keeganhaag) on

Frequently ranked among the best golf courses in Cincinnati, Aston Oaks Golf Club is a favorite of golfers from across the region. But it's a challenge. With swift greens and rolling fairways, the course is situated on a beautiful landscape that both transfixes and tests golfers of all skill levels. Designed by golf legend Jack Nicklaus, the course at Aston Oaks Golf Club offers some truly magnificent scenery. It's perched above the Ohio River, and shaded by majestic white oaks and hickory trees. The 18-hole course features 6,908 yards of golf from the longest tees, for a par of 72.

The Vineyard Golf Course

600 Nordyke Rd., Cincinnati, OH 45255

A post shared by Robbie Huff (@huffstuff06) on

Although its location on the far east side of Cincinnati might make it seem like a bit of a far-flung destination for some, the Vineyard Golf Course has a lot of great features that attract golfers from all over. A lot of it has to do with the course's handsome scenery, with gently rolling fairways and well-manicured greens lined with mature trees. It's simply a lovely golf course to look at, but the Vineyard offers up a challenging round as well. It's been called one of the best conditioned daily fee courses in Cincinnati and is a favorite of locals and visiting golfers alike.

Twin Oaks Golf Course

450 E. 43rd St., Covington, KY 41015

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Liz Deardorff (@lizdeardorff1) on

One of the finest public courses in the region on the Kentucky side of the Ohio River, Twin Oaks Golf Course is known for its palatial Southern-style clubhouse as well as its beautifully maintained 18-hole, par-70 course. Twin Oaks was built in 1927 and is still one of the best places in Northern Kentucky to enjoy a day on the links. With a mixture of mature trees sprinkled throughout the course, as well as its fair share of sand and water obstacles, it's always a fun challenge.

Avon Fields Golf Course

4081 Reading Rd, Cincinnati, OH 45229

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Bill Weir (@bill_weir1) on

Avon Fields Golf Course is an 18-hole, par-66 course that's been challenging local golfers since it opened to the public in 1914. It's not only the oldest golf course in Cincinnati, but the oldest municipal golf course west of the Allegheny Mountains. It offers a fun and challenging game of golf to this day, but also has an immense amount of history on its fairways. Avon Fields has historically been very important to the city's African-American community and was one of the few courses in town that didn't discriminate based on race during the era of segregation.

But before you settle in, there are a few things you should know. 1) We prefer brown mustard to yellow. 2) We love craft beer. 3) We are a city full of sports fanatics.

That's right! Cleveland is definitely a sports city, home to the Browns, the Cavaliers and the Cleveland Indians, so don't be surprised if you start painting your face and collecting jerseys—it's expected when you live here.

To help you get acclimated to being a Cleveland sports fan, we rounded up the essential teams in the city. On this list, you'll find a team for almost every sport from baseball to rugby and roller derby. We hope you'll get a kick out of it!

Cleveland Sports

Cleveland Indians

Game Schedule

Baseball is more than just a sport in Cleveland—it's a religion. And there's no team you'll hear about more than the Indians. Since they were established in 1901, they've brought home two World Series championships. Attending an Indians game is practically a Cleveland rite of passage, so head out to Progressive Field for a game ASAP.

Lake County Captains

Game Schedule

Cleveland's Minor League Baseball team is the Lake County Captains. Many Major League Baseball stars have gotten their start as a Lake County Captain, including Victor Martinez, Chris Archer and CC Sabathia. You can catch one of their games at Classic Park in Eastlake.

Cleveland Sports

Cleveland Cavaliers

Game Schedule

Established in 1970, the Cleveland Cavaliers, or the Cavs, is one of the most famous professional basketball teams in the country. Even if you aren't a basketball fan, you've probably heard of them once or twice due to LeBron James, who got his start on the team in 2003 and lead the team to victory in 2016. Today, you can watch a game at the Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse or follow them around the country during their season—which many hardcore Cavs fans do on an annual basis.

College Teams

Cleveland Sports

Cleveland State Vikings

Game Schedule

Cleveland State University is home to an abundance of fantastic sports teams, from basketball to golf to swimming to wrestling. Plus they offer plenty of women's teams that you can cheer on any time of the year including basketball, fencing, softball and volleyball.

Case Western Reserve Spartans

Just because Case Western is a prestigious, nationally acclaimed, private research university, doesn't mean they don't also love competing! The Spartans feature several highly ranked teams, including football, cross country, basketball, baseball, softball, soccer and more.

Cleveland Browns

Game Schedule

While the Browns are definitely an underdog in the NFL (with one of the longest playoff droughts in NFL history and one of the only teams to ever complete a season without winning a single game) that doesn't mean Clevelanders don't still love the team with a fiery passion. You can catch a game at the FirstEnergy Stadium this season or by visiting one of our favorite sports bars in the city.

Cleveland Gladiators

Currently on Hiatus

The Cleveland Gladiators is an arena football team that was established in 1997. While they were first based in East Rutherford, New Jersey and then later in Las Vegas, Nevada, they finally found their home in Cleveland in 2008. The team is currently on hiatus while the Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse is being renovated, but they hope to play again in 2020.

Cleveland Fusion

Game Schedule

The Fusion is Cleveland's full-contact football team founded in 2001. They compete with teams all across North America as a member of the Women's Football Alliance. While you might think their main goal as a team is to win games, it's actually to make Cleveland a better place to live. That's why they give back via volunteerism and partnerships with the Girl Scouts of Northeast Ohio and the LGBT Community Center of Greater Cleveland and provide a coaching clinic for girls playing flag football.

Ice Hockey

Cleveland Sports

Cleveland Monsters

Game Schedule

Don't worry, hockey lovers—Cleveland has something to offer you too! The Cleveland Monsters, formally known as the Lake Erie Monsters, are our local professional hockey team. They play their home games at the Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse downtown and have one Calder Cup championship under their belt, which they nabbed in 2016.

Roller Derby

Burning River Roller Derby

The Burning River Roller Derby is the premier skater-run flat-track roller derby league in Cleveland. There are several different teams that play in this league including the All-Stars, the Pyromaniacs, the Rolling Pin-Ups and many more.

Cleveland Guardians

While the Cleveland Guardians are a part of the Cleveland Men's Roller Derby league, the team is open to all 18+ people that want to skate for fun, fitness and competition. They compete both locally and nationally with teams all around the United States and Canada. Interested in joining? They offer practices for every skill level every other Wednesday in Brunswick.

You can find them playing their home games at Rugby World or taking a break at PJ McIntyre's, where they like to relax over a pint after practice on Thursday nights.

Iron Maidens

Game Schedule

While rugby is traditionally a "gentleman's sport" as many fans like to say, the Iron Maidens have set out to change that stereotype. Founded in 2003, the Iron Maidens are Cleveland's premier women's rugby club. In addition to being national rugby finalists, they frequently work with Cleveland Fusion to promote and grow women's professional sports.

Cleveland Sports

Cleveland Soccer Club

Game Schedule

The Cleveland Soccer Club is a semi-professional, men's soccer team that competes in the National Premier Soccer League. The team roster is currently comprised of both college players and former college players that are looking to continue their competitive careers.

Cleveland Comets

Game Schedule

New to the Cleveland athletic scene, the Cleveland Comets recently moved to the area from Akron in 2018. They are a women's professional fastpitch softball team that has been garnering a lot of attention as of late due to their recent partnership with Team Mexico for the 2019 season, bringing a ton of great talent to the area. You can catch one of their home games at Sprenger Stadium in Avon this season.
