7 Places to Sip a Cool Summer Treat in Northern Kentucky

Cool Summer Treats - Northern Kentucky - Cutler Real Estate

Summer means warmer temperatures, which are mostly a good thing. But when it gets too hot and you want to cool off, ordering a milkshake or iced coffee can help you chill out. Fortunately, Northern Kentucky has several great locations serving up these cold drinks near Boone County homes for sale. Many also serve food items, so you can enjoy a burger with your milkshake or a pastry with your coffee, and you'll even be able to order a boozy milkshake if you'd like to, although it's also available without the alcohol.

When you're ready to cool off and treat yourself, head to one of the following seven places to order a milkshake or iced coffee in Northern Kentucky.

Fillmore's Dairy Hut

7500 Burlington Pike, Florence, KY 41042

A nostalgic staple of Florence for years, Fillmore's Dairy Hut is the type of place that adults fondly remember going to as kids with their parents or heading to after school or a sporting event, and now they're returning with their own kids. Order a burger, footlong cheese coney topped with homemade Cincinnati-style chili, or other traditional favorite with your milkshake, and you'll be pleasantly surprised at the reasonable prices. Milkshakes come in flavors, including strawberry, blueberry, chocolate chip, butterscotch, and peanut butter.

Graeter's Ice Cream

301 Buttermilk Pike, Fort Mitchell, KY 41017

Graeter's Ice Cream traces its roots back to 1870 in Cincinnati when its founder began selling ice cream from two carts. At the time, it was hand-crafted in French pots. Ice cream is the all-important base of any great milkshake, and the fourth-generation family-owned company still makes it in a French pot freezer that leaves very little trapped air. The result is indulgent, delicious ice cream that translates into the same qualities in their milkshakes. Try a refreshing peach shake in the summer, or create your own from one of the shop's many flavors, including black raspberry chocolate chip and brown butter bourbon pecan. You'll have your choice of a 16-ounce small milkshake, a 20-ounce medium, or a 24-ounce large.

Mad Mike's Burgers & Fries

6420 Dixie Hwy., Florence, KY 41042

Mad Mike's Burgers & Fries serves up fresh, made-to-order burgers, and you can build your own or order a gourmet burger made with a half-pound of 100% black Angus beef. The Rockefeller burger—served with blue cheese crumbles, mango chutney, beer-battered onion strings, cilantro may, and lettuce—is a customer favorite. Have some hand-cut french fries along with your burger, and treat yourself to a milkshake with your meal. You can choose from flavors including cookies and cream, chocolate chip cookie, espresso vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate.

Nomad

225 Fairfield Ave., Bellevue, KY 41073

A post shared by NOMAD (@nomad.ky)

A bar may not be the first destination you think of when you're craving a milkshake, but Nomad serves an impressive list of boozy concoctions made with three ounces of alcohol. If you'd rather not have the alcohol, all shakes are also available in non-boozy versions. Try versions like Dough You Want Me Baby, consisting of ice cream, Ghirardelli caramel sauce, edible cookie dough, and vanilla vodka. The decadent shake is topped with whipped cream, a house-made cookie, chocolate chips, and a cherry. Or order the Oops! I Split It Again, Nomad's take on a banana split. It has ice cream blended with vanilla vodka, Frangelico, Ghirardelli chocolate, and banana split-inspired ingredients like bananas, walnuts, and cherries.

Jet Coffee

8203 U.S. 42, Florence, KY 41042

With its double drive-thru lanes, Jet Coffee quickly lets you cool off and fuel up with an iced coffee before or after work, school, or running errands. Coffee drinks are available hot or iced, including the butterscotch and rum Highlander Grogg brewed coffee. Specialty lattes, which can even be ordered frozen with whipped cream, include interesting flavors such as Flower Power with lavender and honey and Raspberry Truffle with raspberry and dark chocolate. Frappes are also frozen with whipped cream and include caramel and spiced or vanilla chai.

Enlightenment Coffee

11069 Clay Dr., Walton, KY 41094

Enlightenment Cafe is a welcoming community gathering spot that's the perfect place to meet some friends and catch up over coffee. Its coffee beans are equitably sourced and locally roasted by Carabello Coffee for quality and freshness. Cool off with an iced coffee, including a latte, mocha, chocolate Americano with almond and oat milk, bourbon caramel frappe, or white chocolate raspberry frappe. And while you're sipping your coffee, enjoy a house-made baked good, breakfast burrito, or bagel along with it.

Dreamy Whip

3020 Washington St., Burlington, KY 41005

At Dreamy Whip, you can have your choice of the best of both worlds: a milkshake or an iced coffee. If you're in the mood for a shake, try a chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, peanut butter, or banana variety. And if you'd rather cool off with an iced coffee, try an affogato, which combines ice cream and espresso, or order a frosted coffee. The shop also has food trucks that are dispatched across the area, so check their Facebook page linked above to see a schedule of their next locations.

Sip, Sip, Hooray!

Which is your favorite drink to cool off: a milkshake or an iced coffee?

11 Places to Thank a Barista Around Columbus March 1

Barista Day Around Columbus, OH - Cutler Real Estate

Baristas are some of our greatest unsung heroes. Seriously, can you imagine having gotten through this last year without coffee? They're some of our most essential workers, and they hardly ever get thanked.

Well, now's your chance. Barista day is coming up on March 1st, and it's a great opportunity to support some of our great local coffee shops in the Columbus area. Be sure to thank your barista while you're there, and maybe leave a little something extra in that tip jar!

Mission Coffee Co.

1051 N. 4th St., Columbus, OH 43201

A cozy brick-walled coffee shop and roastery in a reclaimed industrial space, Mission Coffee Co. offers some of the finest coffee in Columbus. Every bean is roasted and brewed to perfection. Their coffees are sourced from all around the world before being roasted in Mission Coffee's local Columbus facility, and their friendly and knowledgeable staff will happily help you choose the right brew for your palate.

Crimson Cup Coffee Shop

4541 N. High St., Columbus, OH 43214

A small local chain with a handful of locations in and around Columbus, Crimson Cup Coffee Shop is a great place to grab a quick cup of coffee when you're on the go. The Clintonville location, just a few minutes from the Ohio State University Campus, even has a drive-through window to save time. Crimson Cup also offers a cool brew bar inside, where various single-origin coffees are brewed by the cup to order.

Upper Cup Coffee Co.

79 Parsons Ave., Columbus, OH 43215

The folks at Upper Cup Coffee Co. do a seemingly simple thing—find the best coffee beans from all around the world—and they do it incredibly well. Upper Cup started out in 2010 as a wholesale coffee business but opened a retail shop the following year as their coffee quickly gained an ardent local following. This is the perfect place to sit and savor a finely crafted pour-over or a delicately foamy cappuccino. They serve tasty teas and iced beverages too and have a short-and-simple menu of breakfast and lunch staples to go with your drink.

Roaming Goat Coffee Company

This cozy coffee shop in the Short North Arts District is more than just a place to get coffee. It's a real neighborhood focal point, displaying works by local artists and serving pastries from local bakeries. They also serve rich house-roasted coffee and some of the tastiest, frothiest espresso drinks you're ever likely to taste.

Kafe Kerouac

2250 N. High St., Columbus, OH 43201

This High Street Hangout is many things to many people. It's a thriving arts space that often hosts live music and entertainment. It's a quiet place to study. It's a late-night watering hole serving craft beer and cocktails. Above all, it's a great coffee shop. And whether you need a jolt of espresso to get you going in the morning or a strong Irish coffee to help you wind down, Kafe Kerouac is a great, friendly space in which to enjoy it.

Stauf's Coffee Roasters

627 S. 3rd St. #1060, Columbus, OH 43206

Stauf's was one of Columbus' first micro-roasters when it first opened its doors, and this German Village mainstay has stuck around to become one of the city's most beloved coffee shops. They offer great gourmet espresso drinks and brewed coffee, plus and beans to-go, with welcoming indoor and outdoor seating areas. Be sure to check out their baked goods too, including brownies, muffins, scones, and even house-made dog treats.

Global Gallery Coffee Shop

Global Gallery's indoor space is a popular place for students to sip coffee while studying, and the outdoor patio is a great spot to enjoy an iced latte during the warmer months.

Brioso Roastery & Coffee Bar

329 E. Long St., Columbus, OH 43215

Brioso Roastery & Coffee Bar is one of the best places in Columbus to sample truly unique, flavorful single-origin coffees from all corners of the globe. Their beans are sourced from farmers in some of the world's greatest coffee-producing regions, and then roasted to perfection in-house. You may want to take a bag home with you after you've finished your coffee. Brioso Roastery also offers outstanding espresso drinks and a light lunch menu.

One Line Coffee

745 N. High St., Columbus, OH 43215

Nestled in Columbus' Short North neighborhood, One Line Coffee offers small-batch coffees, roasted to order. It's a great place to grab a bag of beans to brew at home, but the shop's warm, welcoming brick-lined interior is the kind of place that encourages you to stay a while. Besides, their hand-poured coffees and finely tuned espresso drinks are worth savoring slowly. One Line Coffee also has a second location in Franklinton.

Fox in the Snow Cafe

1031 N. 4th St., Columbus, OH 43201

Offering superb coffee and next-level baked goods, Fox in the Snow Cafe is a beloved fixture of the local coffee scene, with three locations around Columbus. It all started at their flagship location in Italian Village in 2014, and the business took off so quickly that additional shops quickly popped up in German Village and New Albany. Food & Wine Magazine ranked Fox in the Snow among the best coffee shops in America in 2019, and folks keep coming back for the amazing coffee and friendly, rustic-chic ambiance.

Pistacia Vera

541 S. 3rd St., Columbus, OH 43215

Located in historic German Village, Pistacia Vera is a from-scratch bakery that also serves up a delicious cup of coffee. An Inside Look Into Eat, Purr, Love: Central Ohio's First Cat Cafe

Cat cafés are sweeping the nation, giving cat and coffee lovers a chance to combine their passions in one convenient location. It's no surprise to us that Columbus is now home to our very own eclectic cat hang-out. Eat, Purr, Love, Central Ohio's first ever cat café, opened on Indianola Avenue in 2016 to a warm reception. In less than two years, the café adopted out over 300 adult and senior cats to Columbus locals. Eat, Purr, Love Cat Cafe Columbus

In July 2018, after Eat, Purr, Love founder Chrissy Kuras moved out of state, Columbus Humane took ownership of the café. Since then, they've continued adopting out cats at an extremely high rate — 92 in just the months of August-December 2018. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution even named them as one of the 14 best cat cafés in the United States. While some things have changed after the acquisition (they now offer pour-over coffee!), many things remain the same, such as their mission to "Fight animal cruelty, help animals in need and advocate for their well-being." And, according to the café manager Emma Walsh, they "will still act as a space that brings together our love of adoptable cats, coffee and the community." Eat, Purr, Love Cat Cafe Columbus

The café is a fantastic place to relax with a good book, play a board game or just sit and watch cats roam. They offer freshly-brewed, locally-roasted coffee, as well as other drink options like tea and hot cocoa. You can purchase prepackaged, 100% vegan bakery items provided by Pattycake Bakery or you're welcome to bring your own snacks with you.   They even hold fun cat-themed events at the café throughout the month, including Yogatos, which is a unique yoga session with cats; Kids & Kitties, a fun cat-themed storytime for children and their parents; and Purrs and Palettes, where you paint a fun picture with a cat by your side. Eat, Purr, Love Cat Cafe Columbus

If you'd like to pay a visit to Eat, Purr, Love, they recommend that you make a reservation. While walk-ins are always welcome when space allows, making a reservation will ensure that you get some good quality kitty-time. You should also remember to get to the café at least 10 minutes early to review the "house rules", sign a waiver and order any refreshments that you'd like. You'll also be asked to pay a $10/hour cover charge and a $5/hour cover charge for children five and under. This charge goes to help the café provide a cozy environment and unique experience for cat lovers while also sustaining a comfortable home for homeless cats until they are adopted. Eat, Purr, Love Cat Cafe Columbus

Only 12 visitors are allowed in the cat lounge at a time, but you can make a private reservation for up to 15 people by emailing info@eatpurrlovecatcafe.com. They are open Wednesday-Sunday, giving the felines their much-needed catnaps on Monday and Tuesday. You can find their complete hours here. Wondering how you can help? Follow Eat, Purr, Love on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter and if you'd like to volunteer with Columbus Humane, you can learn more here. "Every time you make a reservation, book a party, attend an event, or purchase coffee or some awesome retail item, you are supporting all of the animals in our community," said Walsh.

Do you think this is paw-some?
