Journey Back in Time When You Visit These 8 Historic Ohio Mills

Historic Ohio Mills - Explore Ohio - Cutler Real Estate

The earliest water-powered mills date back to the Roman Empire. As farming became an increasingly important part of Ohio's economy, mills were so vital to the industry that communities frequently grew around them.

In the 21st century, several mills remain as monuments to the development of agriculture around Northeast Ohio, Columbus, and Cincinnati. Step back in time for a fascinating look at our state's past with a trip to these picturesque historic mills.

Historic Clifton Mill

75 Water St., Clifton, OH 45316

With its red-sided building, giant wheel, and cascading water, picture-perfect Historic Clifton Mill could have been pulled from a movie set. In reality, the authentic 19th-century grist mill is the only one of six mills in the immediate area that remains standing. After touring the mill, stroll across the adjacent 90-foot covered wooden bridge for some spectacular views of the grounds and stop in at the 1940s Gas Station Museum next door. Complete your day with a fresh-cooked meal at the onsite restaurant, serving breakfast and lunch seven days a week. During spring and summer, the mill itself is open weekdays from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Admission is $3. Call ahead to confirm.

Wolf Creek Mill

St. Rt. 3 South, Loudonville, OH 44842

Just over 20 years ago, Mark Smith and his family were camping in nearby Mohican State Park when they discovered Wolf Creek Mill. Sadly, this once-impressive grist mill had fallen into severe disrepair after years of neglect. As a historic restoration contractor, Mark was inspired to form the non-profit Friends of the Mill Group to restore the site's original glory. The mill itself is now back in operating condition, and the group's ultimate goal is to create a historic village, preserving tradition for future generations. Visit the website for hours as well as the schedule of fundraisers, trade fairs, and other events.

Bear's Mill

6450 Arcanum-Bears Mill Rd., Greenville, OH 45331

While the name may sound like a wildlife sanctuary, Bear's Mill is named for Gabriel Baer, the man who constructed the building in 1849. Incredibly, the framework consists of hand-hewn timber beams that are close to 50 feet long without a single splice. But this still-functioning grist mill is about more than commerce. It also houses the Clark Gallery, a space devoted to showcasing a rotating selection of works from local artists, including pottery made by Bear's Mill potters. Admission is free. Hours are 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 1 – 5 p.m. Sunday.

Gaston's Mill

12021 Echo Dell Rd., East Liverpool, OH 43920

Travel back in time with a visit to Pioneer Village at Beaver Creek State Park. In addition to Gaston's Mill, a fully restored grist mill dating back to 1837, the village is home to a blacksmith shop, chapel, schoolhouse, and a canal-era lock, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Beaver Creek State Park and Pioneer Village are open to the public daily at no charge, while Gaston's Mill may be viewed in operation on select weekends during the summer.

Bieber Mill

4919 Chapman Rd., #4801, Delaware, OH 43015

Tucked away on the banks of the Olentangy River, the ruins of the Bieber Mill might resemble one of the castles from Game of Thrones. In 1848, only a few years after its construction, George Bieber and his son James purchased the original wooden grist mill. James later built a towering stone mill, but lost ownership when he couldn't afford to run the business. Sadly, a fire in the early 1900s destroyed the frame mill and part of the stone mill. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources currently owns the property. They have stabilized the remains and hope to obtain financing for a complete restoration. In the meantime, Bieber Mill's beauty still shines through, making it a popular spot for sightseers and photographers.

Rock Mill

1429 Rockmill Pl. NW, Lancaster, OH 43130

The current Rock Mill, which is the stunning centerpiece of Stebelton Park, is actually the third structure to bear the name. In the mid-2000s, the building underwent a major restoration, including the creation of a 26-foot all-wood waterwheel, which is the largest one in the state. Across from the waterwheel is a breathtaking 14-foot waterfall, where the Hocking River flows through the gorge. A quaint white covered bridge completes the nostalgic scene. The park is open daily from dawn until dusk, while tours of the mill are offered from noon - 4 p.m. each weekend from May through October.

Sauder Village

22611 State Route 2, Archbold, OH 43502

If a history book came to life, it would be Sauder Village. Back in 1976, Erie Sauder built his namesake village as a living tribute to the pioneering spirit that shaped Ohio. Among the 75 historic structures and 50,000 artifacts is a working grist mill, which is used to grind corn into meal for their cooking demonstrations. Visitors also get a chance to try their hand at grinding corn with stones and replicate the method used by Native Americans. Other points of interest include Erie's Farm Shop and the Cabinet Shop, where you can learn more about Erie's other legacy, Sauder Woodworking. Sauder Village opens for the season on May 6. Visit the website for information about hours and admission prices.

Garrett's Mill & Brewing Company

8148 Main St., Garrettsville, OH 44231

"Reuse, repurpose, recycle" is today's mantra of environmental awareness, and it's clearly what owners Shelli and Brian Buchanan had in mind when they founded Garrett's Mill & Brewing Company. When it was constructed in 1804, Garrett's Mill served a radius of 20 miles, leading to the development of the town that bears the same name. Shelli and John kept the essence of the mill in creating their brewery and gastropub. In addition to inventive house brews such as Garrett's Gold and Ma Barker Birch Beer, the restaurant serves elevated pub fare. Signature dishes include the "Brewben," with bratwurst subbing for corned beef, and BBQ chicken gouda mac. Hours are noon - 8 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, noon - 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and noon - 7 p.m. Sunday.

Down by the Old Mill Stream

Grist mills produce flour, which is the foundation for many of our favorite foods. Donuts, cakes, bread, pie ... what's number one on your list of baked goods?

9 Farm-to-Table Restaurants You've Got to Try Around Northeast Ohio

Farm-to-Table Restaurants - Northeast Ohio - Cutler Real Estate

Did you know that food and agriculture is the largest industry in Ohio? With more than 77,000 farms comprising nearly 14 million acres, the Buckeye State is a national leader in more than 35 product sectors.

The highest concentration of farms is in Northeast Ohio, so it's no surprise that the region is rich in farm-to-table dining. Enjoy food the way it was meant to be eaten at these innovative restaurants around Cleveland, Akron, and Canton.

Wolf Creek Tavern

3044 Wadsworth Rd., Norton, OH 44203

While farm-to-table may be a modern concept, Wolf Creek Tavern keeps one foot in the past. The bar, housed in a historic 1830s building, honors their speakeasy legacy with Prohibition-era cocktails made from the original recipes. Wolf Creek's food menu features upscale tavern favorites such as burgers, pasta, and fish and chips made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Follow them on Facebook for news on the weekly burger-and-beer pairings. The kitchen is open 4 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 4 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Forage Public House

14600 Detroit Ave., Lakewood, OH 44107

Farm-to-table meets gastropub at Forage Public House, a hip neighborhood restaurant focused on sustainable ingredients. Taco filling options include grilled Amish chicken, crispy walleye, and vegan cauliflower. Breakfast dishes, such as the popular Hash N Cure with beef brisket, are served all day long. And what would a gastropub be without creative cocktails like Blood Sangria and Black Walnut Manhattan? Forage Public House is open daily from 11 a.m. - 10 p.m. with extended hours until 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Hide-A-Way Buffalo Grill

4021 Mahoning Rd., NE, Canton, OH 44705

Hide-A-Way Buffalo Grill was actually ahead of the farm-to-table curve. Back in 1983, the family-owned restaurant used buffalo burgers as a novelty to build interest in their newly opened business. The high-protein, low-fat meat proved so popular that it's now the restaurant's signature item. Today, buffalo has found its way into menu items such as stew, meatloaf, and even chef's salad. With these dishes accounting for 40 percent of sales, the restaurant goes through one entire buffalo per month. Carryout is easy with the dedicated to-go window. Hours are 11 a.m. - 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

The Blue Door Cafe & Bakery

1970 State Rd., Cuyahoga Falls, OH 44223

When you're recognized by the New York Times, you must be doing something right. In 2020, The Blue Door Cafe & Bakery made the Times' list of "Best Brunch in Every State." This charming, European-style cafe features a half-ton Alsatian bread oven and an antique pine pastry case. Fans drive from all around Northeast Ohio to enjoy dishes such as chicken and waffles as well as their croissants, Danishes, sticky buns, and other delectable baked goods. Order ahead for pickup at their convenient drive-thru window. The Blue Door is open until 2 p.m. daily, with baked goods and coffee available starting at 6 a.m. while brunch begins at 8 a.m.

Nosh Curbside

5929 Darrow Rd., Hudson, OH 44236

What's better than a hot, home-cooked meal? How about a hot, home-cooked meal prepared by a professional? Whether you want to try something new or you just need a break, Nosh Curbside offers fresh, made-to-order meals delivered right to your car. Mix and match entrées and sides such as vegan meatballs, gouda mac & cheese, cast iron beets, and their signature chicken parmesan. Feeding the family? Check out the dinners for four. Dishes are available Thursday through Saturday, with ordering from 4:30 p.m. - 8 p.m. for pickup from 5 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

Flying Fig

2523 Market Ave., Cleveland, OH 44113

Karen Small, owner and executive chef of Flying Fig, is truly committed to supporting Northeast Ohio. In 1999, Karen opened the eatery and its companion market next door as a way of contributing to downtown's rebirth. Build your own cheese and charcuterie board or enjoy some variety with several of the sharable small plates. Their signature sandwiches, including the popular grilled eggplant, make a perfect grab-and-go lunch for carryout. Lunch and dinner hours are 11 a.m. - 9 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, with brunch served on weekends from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Aurelia

16 N. Main St, Chagrin Falls, OH 44022

James Balchak, the classically-trained chef at Aurelia, explains the restaurant's culinary attitude in five words: "I believe in Northeast Ohio." Aurelia's menu changes daily to make use of the freshest meat, seafood, and produce available from local suppliers. A typical dish might include fried brown basmati rice with organic carrots and broccolini along with Lake Erie perch or walleye. Chef Balchak sums up Aurelia's offerings as, "honest food and drink." Order online for curbside pickup or local delivery. Dinner is served 4 p.m. - 8 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 5 p.m. - 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, with brunch served 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. on weekends.

Butcher & Sprout

1846 Front St., Cuyahoga Falls, OH 44221

In case the name doesn't give it away, signs both inside and outside Butcher & Sprout proclaim their farm-to-table philosophy. The family-friendly bar and restaurant is known for its gourmet burgers, made with all-Ohio, grass-fed, non-GMO beef. If you prefer, substitute a chicken, turkey, or plant-based patty. Start with an order of pickle fries, which many customers find irresistible. Efficient diners go for the Colossal Bloody Mary, topped with bacon, pickle fries, celery, and a four-ounce cheeseburger. Butcher & Sprout is open 11 a.m. - 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. - 11 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. - 11 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. - 10 p.m. Sunday.

Osso Farm Restaurant

9145 Old State Rd., Hambden, OH 44024

At Osso Farm Restaurant, owners Scott and Tara Webster take the concept of farm-to-table one step further. Their pasture-to-plate menu includes scratch-made dishes using ingredients from the family's own Flying W Farm, where the restaurant is located. As one satisfied diner recently put it, the food is so fresh "you'll be daydreaming about your meal weeks after you've eaten it." With Angus and Wagyu steaks, gourmet burgers, and authentic BBQ, there's something on the menu for all tastes. Reservations are highly recommended. Hours are 5 p.m. - 10 p.m. Thursday through Saturday.

These 9 Places Around Northeast Ohio Are Perfect for a Winter Hike

Winter Hiking in Northeast Ohio - Cutler Real Estate

The colder temperatures have blown in and turned Northeast Ohio into a winter wonderland. Though it may be a little chilly, the bright sun and blue skies create the perfect conditions for a relaxing hike through one of our many trails. Discover the beauty of Northeast Ohio in the winter with a hike at one of these area trails.

Nelson-Kennedy Ledges State Park

12440 OH-282, Garrettsville, OH 44231

Where does one go on a hike in the winter? The Devil's Icebox, of course! You'll find this rock formation as well as the Old Maid's Kitchen and Indian Pass within the Nelson-Kennedy Ledges State Park. There are four unique trails: the Red Trail is a half-mile, the Blue and Yellow Trails are three-quarters of a mile, and the White Trail is one-mile. Since many of these rock formations were made by receding glaciers, we can't think of a better time of the year to explore Nelson-Kennedy Ledges State Park than in the heart of winter.

Blue Hen Falls

2001 Boston Mills Rd., Brecksville, OH 44141

If you're searching for a wonderful place to hike, there are few outside Cleveland better than the Cuyahoga Valley. Of its many trails, a hike to Blue Hen Falls is one of the best family winter hikes that you can take. This three-mile trek should take about two hours. You'll first follow the Buckeye Trail then head across Boston Mills Road before venturing half-mile downhill to reach Blue Hen Falls. This 15-foot waterfall is quite a sight, especially in the winter, so be sure to bring your camera.

South Chagrin Reservation

37374 Miles Rd., Bentleyville, OH 44022

Explore more of the Buckeye Trail in the South Chagrin Reservation. Located along the Chagrin River, the South Chagrin Reservation is a lovely place for a hike. What we love about this area is that it's full of both natural and manmade wonders. Henry Rock Church, for instance, was carved way back in the 1880s, while Lookout Lodge was constructed in the late 1930s. With opportunities to hike, sled, fish, and explore the natural, historical, and cultural elements of the area, South Chagrin Reservation deserves a spot on your winter hiking itinerary.

Rocky River Reservation

24000 Valley Parkway, North Olmsted, OH 44070

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Bill Trentel (@btrentel)

Bird-watchers and wildlife viewers will enjoy a winter hike through the Rocky River Reservation. A walk to the Berea Falls overlook is a must, as well as a stop with your toboggan at Barrett Sledding Hill. As you wind through the trails throughout the reservation, keep an eye out for Ohio's local wildlife, including the stunning white-tailed deer.

Mill Creek Park

Youngstown, OH 44509

Mill Creek Park is the ultimate destination for outdoor winter fun. It's the largest of all the MetroParks and features 45-miles of trails where you can sled, cross-country ski, and hike. We suggest taking a stroll over by Lake Glacier where you can easily access the East Glacier Trail and Old Tree Trail. If you want a super-quick hike, the Lily Pond Circle at Lily Pond is a better option. Lake Newport offers access to the West Newport Trail, Islands Trail, and West and East Channel trails, while Lake Cohasset provides access to the East and West Cohasset trails. With so many trails to hike, you can spend the entire winter exploring Mill Creek Park.

Munroe Falls Metro Park

521 S. River Rd., Munroe Falls, OH 44262

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Bob Sargent (@thorsargent)

Munroe Falls Metro Park offers two fantastic areas to explore during the winter. The Lake Area features the 2.2-mile Indian Spring Trail, which loops you through a stream, wetlands, and a hill perfect for sledding. The Tallmadge Meadows Area is perfect for cross-country skiing and features two trails. The shorter Meadow Loop Trail is only 0.35-miles and is accessible for wheelchairs, strollers, and canes/walkers. The longer Meadow Trail is two-miles long and gives you a glimpse at wildlife in the meadow.

Deep Lock Quarry Metro Park

5779 Riverview Rd., Peninsula, OH 44264

Grab your camera and get ready to snap photos of amazing vistas along the Quarry Trail in Deep Lock Quarry Metro Park. This 1.4-mile moderate trail isn't too strenuous and will lead you to the Erie & Ohio Canal's deepest lock. As you walk, you'll pass millstones and have the opportunity to spot amazing views of the Cuyahoga River.

Euclid Creek Reservation

850 Euclid Creek Parkway, Cleveland, OH 44121

Though the Euclid Creek Reservation is a popular summertime picnic and exercise spot, it's also a wonderful place for a winter hike. There are four trails leading through the area, ranging from 1.1 to 2.5 miles. Each will take you through diverse landscapes like Bluestone quarries, Euclid Beach, and the Wildwood Marina. If you're searching for a little more fun to add to your hike, grab your sled and ride down the hill at the Kelley Picnic Area.

F.A. Seiberling Nature Realm

1828 Smith Rd., Akron, OH 44313

The F.A. Seiberling Nature Realm invites you to take a hike or enjoy the view this winter. Three basic trails wind through the area. The half-mile Cherry Lane Trail is a loop that leads to an amazing suspension bridge. The Fernwood Loop trail is nearly a mile in length and connects to the Cherry Lane Trail. For a slightly longer walk, the Seneca Trail is a mildly challenging unpaved loop that takes you deep into the forest. When you're finished with your hike, you can warm up at the Seneca deck fireplace.

When the Snow Flies: 10 Sled Riding Spots Around Northeast Ohio

Sled Riding Destinations - Northeast Ohio - Cutler Real Estate

The Northeast Ohio area is known for its vast number of recreational opportunities that make it a great place to live or visit. There's plenty to do outdoors throughout the year, but when the snow starts to accumulate, the real fun begins. Sledding is a popular activity for all ages, and you'll see young kids, as well as adults, zipping down local hills with abandon all winter long.

Fortunately, you can find many sledding hills to visit throughout the area, so you probably won't have to visit the same place twice in a season – unless you want to, of course! From the tamer hills that are appropriate for kids or beginners to steeper ones that will appeal to the more adventurous, Northeast Ohio has sledding hills to suit every age and comfort level.

Grab your sled, bundle up, and check out the following 10 sled riding spots in Northeast Ohio that are sure to get your adrenaline pumping:

Goodyear Heights Metro Park Sled Riding Hill – Summit Metroparks

2077 Newton St., Akron, OH 44305

Goodyear Heights Metro Park's sledding hill is extremely popular, so you may want to try it during off-peak (early morning) hours to get the best experience. The hill is large and steep and has a rope along the side to help you get back up to the top, and you'll also find fire barrels along the way to help you warm up. And if you'd like to sled in the dark, Goodyear Heights has lights for nighttime sledding.

Punderson State Park Sled Riding Hill

11755 Kinsman Rd., Newbury, OH 44065

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Mike Gillam (@mikegillam61)

One of northeast Ohio's premier winter sports parks, Punderson has not only sledding but also cross-country skiing and snowmobile trails. There's even a cabin to warm up in and a lighted hill if you want to sled under the stars. And if you'd like to stay the night, family cabins, as well as a resort manor house, are available.

Chapin Forest Reservation

9938 Chillicothe Rd. (Rt. 306), Kirtland, OH 44094

If you have young kids, they may not be ready for some of the area's larger sledding hills. But the small hill at Chapin Forest Reservation is perfect for young sledders. It's frequented by cross-country skiers to practice their control skills, but it's also used for sledding. You'll find the hill off the Hobart Road entrance to the park.

Riverview Park Sled Riding Hill – Lake Metroparks

4895 Bailey Rd., Madison, OH 44057

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Kyle Horton (@kylehortonn)

You'll find Riverview Park Sled Riding Hill conveniently located next to the parking lot, so you'll have an easy trip from your car before you can enjoy some fun sledding. This is the park district's steepest hill, and you can whiz down it until 11 p.m. If you need to warm up, there's a fire ring with firewood near the picnic shelter.

Cascade Park

387 Furnace St., Elyria, OH 44035

You'll find one of Lorain County's most popular sledding hills at Cascade Park in Elyria. The large hill is visible from the main entrance, and you'll also find a small playground and restrooms conveniently located at the bottom of the hill – two things that will come in handy if you're bringing the kids along.

Firestone Metropark – Sled Hill Drop-Off – Summit Metroparks

55 E. Warner Rd., Akron, OH 4431

Firestone Metropark is great for all ages and for those who are thrill-seekers as well as those who would rather sled on a smaller hill. That's because it has a large hill that has steep sections as well as those with a slower incline. The hill isn't lighted, so come earlier in the day if you're ready to make your way down.

Boettler Park Sled Riding Hill

5300 Massilon Rd., North Canton, OH 44720

Summit County's Boettler Park Sled Riding Hill is large and is appropriate for a wide range of ages since the hill has varying inclines. There's also a 30,000-square-foot playground located nearby on Heritage Hill, as well as places to snowboard and cross-country ski. You'll also find heated restrooms conveniently located near the riding hill.

Sand Run Metro Park – North Hawkins Area Sled Riding Hill – Summit Metroparks

800 N. Hawkins Ave., Akron, OH 44313

North Hawkins Area Sled Riding Hill has been popular for generations of sledders and is still a go-to destination for those who are looking for a large sled-riding hill. Go after dark if you'd like since the hill is lighted. You can also cross-country ski on trails or ice skate on a pond once it's frozen over.

Vermilion River Reservation – Mill Hollow Sled Riding Hill – Lorain County Metroparks

51211 N. Ridge Rd., Vermilion, OH 44089

Zooming down a large sled riding hill at Vermilion River Reservation has been a popular activity for many years, and that remains true. The large hill is on your right as you enter the Bacon Woods area of Vermilion River Reservation, and when you get too cold, you can warm up in a nearby shelter that's partially enclosed.

Kendall Hills Sled Riding Hills – Cuyahoga Valley National Park

5465 Quick Rd., Peninsula, OH 44264

You'll find several hills of varying inclines to slide down at Cuyahoga Valley National Park once you go deep into the park (about a mile east of Akron Peninsula Road). There's a separate area for sleds and toboggans, and you'll find a burn barrel to help you warm up at the top.

Despite the store's name, the crunchy goodness from Mama Made It Kettle & Gourmet Popcorn is on a whole other level from your childhood snacks made on the stove or in an air popper. When the housing bubble crashed in the late 2000s, successful realtor Mark Whitworth seized the opportunity to expand his hobby into a thriving business. Mushroom-style kernels are popped in traditional kettles to form a shape that holds a variety of seasonings.

Most dishes on the menu, including the signature black cast iron skillets, come in huge portions with a price tag of $10 or less. Breakfast and lunch are served every day but Tuesday.

COLUMBUS

Nutcracker Family Restaurant

63 E. Broad St., Pataskala, OH 43062

Nutcracker Family Restaurant is celebrating its silver anniversary in 2020, but a visit will take you back to the golden days of the 1950s. The name may have a holiday feel, but it's actually a remnant from the restaurant's original incarnation as a candy and dessert shop called Nutcracker Sweets. While the shop has expanded into a full-service diner, it still holds an incredible assortment of nutcrackers in all sizes, shapes, and styles. Play some Chuck Berry on the jukebox while you wait for your meal of meatloaf, chicken Parmigiana, open-face beef sandwich, and other comfort food favorites. Nutcracker Family Restaurant opens bright and early at 7 a.m. every day but Monday.

For Tom and Kathy Pappas, Tommy's Diner is truly their American dream come to life. Tom immigrated to Columbus from Greece, while Kathy is the first-generation daughter of Greek parents. The restaurant business is definitely in the family's blood, with younger son Michael working in the diner and older son Louis owning a catering business. How outstanding is their customer service? One guest tells a story about being unable to decide between a Reuben sandwich and an omelet, so the staff made him a Reuben omelet. Visit the website or Facebook page to see the list of daily specials. Tommy's Diner is open for breakfast and lunch seven days a week.

Canal Wigwam

4 S. High St., Canal Winchester, OH 43110

The sign outside the front of Canal Wigwam welcomes you to "The Gathering Place." Canal Wigwam's roots extend all the way back to 1899, when the combination restaurant, bakery, and bowling lane was the place to be for local residents. Over the years, the consistent thread has been a focus on home cooking that warms the heart and stomach. The menu features classic dishes such as chicken and waffles, BLT sandwich, and tuna salad, along with daily specials like baked pork loin and ham and bean soup. Breakfast and lunch at Hathaway's Diner has been a downtown Cincinnati tradition since 1956. The iconic checkerboard-style floor, brightly-lit red-and-aqua color scheme, and dining counter create the kitschy, comfy ambiance that's such a traditional element of diners. Goetta, the meat-and-grain sausage uniquely beloved in Cincinnati, is a staple of Hathaway's menu. Other traditional diner favorites include country fried steak, club sandwich, and patty melt. Be sure to save room for a slice of apple pie or a Creamsicle milkshake. Hathaway's is open for business seven days a week.

Sacred Beast Diner

1437 Vine St., Cincinnati, OH 45202

While nostalgia is the name of the game at most diners, Sacred Beast takes the traditional concept and adds a contemporary twist for the 21st century. The decor is clean and elegant, with modern touches such as an open floor plan and floor-to-ceiling windows. Most importantly, the diner's slogan, "Simple Food. Taken Seriously." lets you know you're in for some good eating. The Diner Breakfast is an upscale combo of scrambled eggs, lemon ricotta pancakes, and pork belly, while the European-influenced Dirty French burger is topped with Gruyere cheese, caramelized onions, au poivre sauce, and Mornay. Sacred Beast is open for dinner Thursday and Friday and all day on weekends.

In business for 79 years and counting, Sugar n' Spice Diner is clearly doing it up right. Generations of families keep coming back for the cartoon wall art, vividly colored decor, trademark rubber ducks, and quality food. Signature dishes such as Wispy Thin pancakes, Cuddlin' Puppy hot dogs, and Spanish Bull burgers remain largely unchanged since Mort Keller opened the original Reading Road location in 1941. In July, current owner Adam Myerson opened a second location in Cincinnati's Over-the-Rhine neighborhood inside a one-time railroad dining car. Both locations are open daily for breakfast and lunch.

Instead of preparing your normal waffle breakfast, we encourage you to treat yourself to a giant, fresh waffle at one of these restaurants around Northeast Ohio.

Ball Ball Waffle

2999 Payne Ave. Suite 126, Cleveland, OH 44114

Let's kick our list off inside Asia Plaza at Ball Ball Waffle. This street food shop serving up traditional Hong Kong eats is ready to treat you to one of their delicious waffles. These tasty waffles, which look like bubble wrap, come in sweet and savory options. Top yours with chocolate chips, salty egg, or even seaweed. Grab a cup of Hong Kong milk tea, and you'll celebrate National Waffle Day in a way you won't forget.

Spoiler alert: Mr. Wonderful's Chicken & Waffles is, in fact, absolutely wonderful. They might not have invented the waffle, but they did make it wonderful. Order up a single, giant waffle with your choice of chicken wings, tenders, thighs, or breasts. You can swap it out for shrimp or fish if you'd like, as long as you make sure it's smothered in Sweet Jesus glaze.

Lucky's Café

777 Starkweather Ave., Cleveland, OH 44113

Grab a taste of Northeast Ohio at Lucky's Café on National Waffle Day. This award-winning café supports Ohio farmers by including their fresh ingredients in as many menu items as possible. Whether you visit for breakfast or weekend brunch, their vanilla bean waffles will make your day amazing. These vegan items are topped with a strawberry-rhubarb compote, a dash of tubanado, given a dollop of honey-infused whipped cream, and drizzled with a homemade caramel sauce. No, you're not dreaming – these heavenly waffles will remind you how lucky you are to live in Cleveland.

For nearly 50 years, Wally Waffle has been one of the best places in Akron to grab breakfast. It should come as no surprise that they're pretty darn good at whipping up their namesake dish. They have not one, not two, but 17 different waffles to sample. Go the healthy route with a Better Day, The Patriot, or Strawberry waffle, all topped with fresh fruit. Or you can sweeten up your morning with the Elvis, Funnel Cake, or Buckeye waffle, each topped with sweet ingredients like peanut butter, cinnamon sugar, and whipped cream. Better yet, invite 16 of your closest friends so you can sample each one…purely for National Waffle Day research purposes, of course.

Eye Opener

1688 W. Market St., Akron, OH 44313

Few places feel more homey and comfortable than the classic American diner, and Eye Opener is Akron is the perfect place to meet, eat, and enjoy National Waffle Day. This wonderful gourmet breakfast joint aims to please with their Flat Iron Waffle. This Belgian waffle is topped with whipped cream and confectioners sugar. No crazy toppings, just a classic Belgian waffle the way it's meant to be made. They will, however, let you get a little creative with your order if you'd like to add peanut butter and River Herb Farm Dazzleberry Jelly to make it a PB&J Waffle.

Believe it or not, one of the sweetest ways to celebrate National Waffle Day is with a cold cup of ice cream! Mason's Creamery creates handmade small batches of ice cream in classic and unique varieties. They'll serve it to you in a waffle cone, but seeing as it's National Waffle Day, they'll even put it atop a fresh egg waffle. Since it's on an actual waffle, we're pretty sure that we can count this ice cream dish as breakfast.

Southern Café

11817 Detroit Ave., Lakewood, OH 44107

Cleveland's premier soul food destination naturally has some of the best Southern-style waffles in the city. Southern Café takes classic soul food dishes straight from grandma's kitchen and gives them a unique spin that makes them irresistible. Don't believe us? Then order up their Buttermilk Fried Chicken & Red Velvet Waffles. One leg, one thigh, four waffles, and a cup of low country grits. We can see your mouth watering already. Keep in mind that Southern Café doesn't open until 11 AM, so we suggest skipping breakfast and saving your appetite for a soulful lunch.

The minute you set your eyes on the 18th-century townhouse that Heck's Café calls home, you'll know that you're in for a fantastic gourmet American meal. Original recipes and local ingredients combine to create a uniquely delicious menu that includes one amazing Nutella Waffle. Topped with whipped cream, Nutella, strawberries, bananas, and toasted hazelnuts, the Nutella Waffle is absolutely perfect. Add an order of Bacon Mac n Cheese or home fries to your plate to complement the sweetness with a little savory crunch. How can you make it better? Pair it with a handspun Nutella milkshake, and let your taste buds swim in a sea of Nutella goodness.

Where to Donate Homemade Masks Around Northeast Ohio

Homemade Masks - Northeast Ohio - Cutler Real Estate

Let's be honest — these last few weeks have been tough on everyone.

To say that COVID-19, also known as the coronavirus, has disrupted life around the world is an understatement. Within a matter of weeks, our everyday lifestyles were completely altered in unprecedented ways — so much so that the CDC recommends that all men, women, and children wear protective masks over their mouth and nose when leaving the house. This is, understandably, a scary reality for all of us, but it's an especially frightening way of life that our essential workers have to adopt.

At Cutler Real Estate, we want to support our family members, friends, neighbors, and service workers in the communities throughout Northeast Ohio in any way we can. One way that we can unite and proactively slow the spread of coronavirus is to make, wear, and donate homemade masks. You can make these masks from many items that you already have in your home. Let's go over a few ways that you can make these masks at home, why you can protect yourself by wearing them in public, and how do donate these masks and other vital medical supplies to facilities around Northeast Ohio.

Why Make & Wear Homemade Masks?

A post shared by Mercy Medical Center Canton (@cantonmercy) on

Sadly, there are thousands of confirmed coronavirus cases in Ohio. Until widespread accessibility to testing, more effective treatment options, and a better understanding of the virus itself become a reality, we need to take every opportunity we can to slow the spread. This means practicing social distancing by staying in our homes as much as possible and always wearing a protective mask whenever we leave home.

Although the virus itself is microscopic and can pass through most face coverings, the virus often attaches itself to water molecules that come out of our noses and mouths when we sneeze or cough. Many types of fabric can effectively contain most of these molecules, which means any type of face covering is better than none at all.

While officials ask that all non-medical personnel refrain from purchasing the N95 surgical masks and procedure masks so that our healthcare workers who come in contact with this virus on a daily basis have access to them, the CDC encourages all individuals to make their own face masks. Currently, JOANN fabric and craft stores across the nation have free tools, supplies, and guidance available for anyone wanting to make masks. Many other businesses and organizations around Northeast Ohio are also providing supplies to those who want to join the effort and support the community.

How to Sew a Homemade Mask

A post shared by Rust Belt Flannels (@rustbeltflannels) on

There are two ways that you can make a homemade mask, the first of which is to sew one. Here are the abridged UH-approved steps to make your own (full directions and materials needed available at this link).

  • Step 1: Print out a pattern (composed of A and B pieces) and cut them out on paper. Place these paper cut-outs on the fabric and cut out two of the A and two of the B.

  • Step 2: Align both A pieces together and sew the pattern together with ¼" seam. Repeat for the B pieces.

  • Step 3: Sew the exterior piece of the mask to the interior piece of the mask.

  • Step 4: Thread a sturdy wire like a pipe cleaner or paperclips underneath your stitching.

  • Step 5: Insert a fabric tie and secure it with stitching.

  • Step 6: Insert a filter material such as a coffee filter into the center of the mask between the fabrics.

How to Make a Homemade Mask Without Sewing

An alternative way that you can make a mask is with a simple pair of scissors. While you can use any fabric on-hand, it's suggested that you use at least two layers of cotton. A bandana, old shirt, or pillowcase are good options. You can fold and tie these fabrics around your face, with or without a filter inserted into the center. You can also cut out ear holes or use ties, rubber bands, or other straps to secure it around your face.

Ideally, this fabric will completely cover your face from the bridge of your nose down underneath your chin. It shouldn't restrict your breathing or speaking, but it must be thick enough to prevent water molecules from passing through the fabric. Please also remember to refrain from touching the front of your mask as that could place your hands in contact with the virus, which you could potentially spread to other parts of your face or to others you come in contact with.

Why You Should Make & Donate Homemade Masks

A post shared by Summa Health (@summahealth) on

You have the option of either disposing of your mask or washing it in the washing machine for safe reuse. If you're social distancing, you'll ideally only need to wear your mask a limited number of times throughout our quarantine. Unfortunately, our healthcare workers are constantly exposed to potentially infected patients which means their supply usage is drastically higher.

Believe it or not, healthcare workers in Ohio will use 13 N95 face masks, 14 protective gowns, and 36 pairs of medical gloves while caring for a patient in the Intensive Care Unit over a 24-hour period. As potential new coronavirus cases continue to rise, as well as the daily need for medical care not associated with the virus, our healthcare workers will need more masks than ever before.

There are dozens of medical facilities around the area that desperately need masks. Here are a few that you can send homemade masks and other supplies to right now:

  • Summa Health System is in need of homemade masks, which can be delivered to their Corporate Office or mailed to their Volunteer Office.

  • University Hospitals in need of masks and other medical supplies that can be mailed in or dropped off at various UH locations. Many UH locations also have mask-making materials available for pick-up. They are also sourcing corporate materials and manufacturing capabilities that can be arranged via email.

  • Akron's Children's Hospital is in need of homemade masks, donations of which can be arranged through email.

12 Colorful Places to See Fall Foliage in Northeast Ohio

While Vermont and New Hampshire might get more national attention for their beautiful displays of fall foliage, residents of Northeast Ohio know that our autumn colors are just as breathtaking. Our slice of paradise is bursting with sprawling parkland, sparkling lakes, wooded roadways and trails where you can get a taste of our seasonal beauty—you just have to know where to go.

We rounded up 12 of our favorite places to see fall foliage in the area—including some parks, waterfalls and covered bridges—so grab your camera and get ready to fall in love with Ohio all over again!

Note: Most of Ohio's best fall colors occur in the middle of October, but you can still see some leaves changing all throughout September. For the most accurate prediction, check out this fall foliage map from the Smoky Mountains National Park website.

Ashtabula County

Fall Foliage NE Ohio

Photo courtesy of Richard McBride via the Ashtabula Covered Bridge Festival

Nestled in the extreme northeast corner of Ohio, Ashtabula County is chock full of stunning places to view fall leaves, due to its dense deciduous forests and sparse population. For the best views, drive south on State Road 534 from Geneva to Windsor, where you'll be treated to miles and miles of vineyards as well as two of the county's 19 covered bridges. We recommend visiting on the second weekend of October when the Ashtabula County hosts their annual Covered Bridge Festival—full of entertainment, rides, games and a festive parade!

Bedford Reservation

The Bedford Reservation, nestled just above the Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Bedford, features a deep gorge carved out by Tinker's Creek, full of picturesque vistas and waterfalls. In the forests, you'll find mature trees adorned with yellow, orange and green and other abundant wildlife. The area also offers plenty of opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, picnicking and horseback riding. But to get the most out of your scenic visit, we recommend heading straight to the overlook along Gorge Parkway, which boasts one of the best views in Northeast Ohio.

Cuyahoga Valley National Park

A post shared by Visual Wilderness (@visual_wilderness) on

This centrally located national park is just a short distance from Cleveland and Akron, but its many acres of untouched scenery and countless species of plants and wildlife make it feel like it's worlds away. Cuyahoga Valley National Park is perhaps the most popular outdoor destination in the state, and frequently makes lists of "must-visit" parks in the country. During the fall, this is even more true! The trees explode into color, providing a warm and welcoming atmosphere for leisurely hikes and picnics. If you're interested in taking a hike while you're there, make sure to check out our complete guide to hiking in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park!

Hocking Hills

This popular, outdoorsy destination is filled with some of the most interesting scenery in the country, from breathtaking sandstone cliffs and waterfalls to caves and colorful forests. During the day, you can hike, bike and fish your way around the hills, or visit the charming towns nearby. And while locals and visitors alike flock to Hocking Hills for the camping, we highly recommend booking a cabin for a weekend or longer. Most of these cabins are outfitted with hot tubs, fireplaces, hammocks and spectacular views (of course). On your way, don't miss out on the chance to stop by Ohio's Ravenwood Castle, which has repeatedly been named one of the coolest destinations in the state.

The Holden Arboretum

A post shared by Rhonda Coe (@rhonnac) on

If a visit to the Holden Arboretum isn't on the top of your fall to-do list, then stop everything you're doing and head over right now. This famous arboretum is practically an outdoor playground that features cultivated gardens, trails and interesting attractions like the Murch Canopy Walk and the Kalberer Family Emergent Tower, which stands 120 feet above the forest floor. Not only will you have a blast exploring all of the interesting fauna among the bright autumn colors, but you'll also be able to stand in the trees and catch a breathtaking view from above. Need we say more?

Holmes County

Holmes County, the heart of Ohio's Amish Country, is certainly one of the most charming places in the state. On any given day, a leisurely walk or drive in the area will reveal narrow, winding roads, horse-drawn carriages, roadside farm stands, wavy fields of corn and a variety of beautiful trees. During the autumn months, these trees (including maples, oaks and buckeyes) explode into vibrant reds, oranges and yellows, transforming the county into something out of a fairy tale. But don't take our word for it—according to National Geographic, Holmes County is one of the top 10 places in the world to see fall foliage.

Lake Erie Bluffs

If you're not ready to give up the fun of summer quite yet—don't worry, we get it. Head out to Lake Erie Bluffs on the coast, which offers the perfect mix of summertime lake activities and scenic fall views. If it isn't too cold, you can take a kayak or canoe out on the water and experience the shoreline views of trees and trails first hand. There's also a 50-foot observation tower where you can get a 360-degree perspective of Lake Erie and the best of Ohio's natural fall beauty!

Lanterman's Mill

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Always Yours Picture Framing (@viewalwaysyours) on

Lanterman's Mill dates back to 1845 and is recognized as one of Mahoning County's most historic landmarks—and one of its most picturesque! The mill sits adjacent to the Mahoning River and overlooks Lanterman's Falls, which makes for a great photo from the outside. But don't leave without venturing in—the mill still offers stone-ground flours and gifts to the public, and is staffed by knowledgeable people who can inform you about the history of the area!

Rockefeller Park

If you want to find a place to enjoy the season within the city, pay a visit to the Cleveland Cultural Gardens in Rockefeller Park just outside of Cleveland. The lush grounds host more than 30 gardens, all designed and cultivated by distinct cultural or nationality groups, representing the diversity and multiculturalism of the city. The area is even more gorgeous in the fall when trees all over the park turn a startling bright yellow and shed their leaves. The gardens are often driven through rather than explored by foot and admission is free!

Rocky River Reservation

Fall Foliage NE Ohio

Photo courtesy of Kyle Lanzer via Cleveland Metroparks

Cleveland Magazine calls the Rocky River Reservation one of the best places in the state to view fall leaves, and we tend to agree! The reservation includes a nature center, marina and stables along with interesting hiking trails so you can see the fall foliage up close. While you're there, make sure to take advantage of the Fort Hill Stairs, which ascend 90-feet above the east and west branches of the Rocky River, providing an optimal view of the area's fall foliage.

Squire's Castle in the North Chagrin Reservation

Perhaps the most picturesque destination in Cleveland, the ruins of Squire's Castle stand proudly in the heart of the North Chagrin Reservation. After a hike in the woodlands (or a rousing game of golf at the Manakiki Golf Course), set out a picnic in front of the castle. From here you can admire the beautiful architecture, soak in the autumn sunshine, and capture pictures of the colorful foliage. While there, make sure to share the story of builder Feargus B. Squire, whose wife supposedly still haunts the grounds.

Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens

Fall Foliage NE Ohio

Photo courtesy of the Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens

Built in 1915, the Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens is a spectacular example of architecture from the era. The home once belonged to the founder of Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, Frank Seiberling, but was opened to the public after his passing. It now stands as a beloved Akron landmark and has even received the title of "best historic home tour in America" by the readers of USA Today. Tour the house and marvel at the antique furniture and detailing, but don't miss out on a turn through the gardens. During the fall months, a picnic outside allows you to view the marvelous mansion and the surrounding color all at once.

The 11 Best Pumpkin Patches, Apple Orchards + Corn Mazes in the Akron & Canton Area, Mapped

The Akron and Canton area was built on a strong agricultural history. As a result, we're blessed with year-round farmers' markets, local agriculture experiences and plenty of places to pick a pumpkin and sip fresh apple cider every fall.

To prove it, we rounded up a few of our favorite local spots where you can pick your own pumpkin, pick your own apples, watch your cider being pressed and eat plenty of pumpkin and apple donuts before enjoying festive, farm activities. This fall, make a trip to one (or more!) of these family farms and you'll want to come back every year.

Use our interactive map to find the pumpkin patch, apple orchard, or corn maze nearest you!

Arrowhead Orchard

Pumpkin Patches in Akron & Canton

2019 marks 87 years of community service, family fun and of course, delicious apples at Arrowhead Orchard! The farm is open seven days a week, but you'll want to visit during one of their family fun weekends this year—which will run until October 20. Each weekend, Friday-Sunday, will feature a corn maze, hayrides, a hamster run, a zip-line for children, an apple train and so much more.

Beckwith Orchards Cider Mill

1617 Lake Rockwell Road, Kent

The Beckwith Orchards Cider Mill has been a family-owned and -operated farm market for over 125 years—and it isn't hard to see why they've been so successful.
